Stomach flu, also known as gastroenteritis is a type of viral infection that can be spread from one person to another in different ways. This disease is misreferred as ‘flu’ because the flu affects the respiratory system of the body but gastroenteritis affects the stomach. It usually happens when you eat food or drink water that contains germs of this virus. Stomach flu can last for more than 10 days.

Types of Gastroenteritis

There are two major types of gastroenteritis. The rotavirus is a type of gastroenteritis that is most common in children and infants. It is the most common cause of diarrhea in children of small ages. Almost every child has to face rotavirus at least once in the first five years of his life.

The second most common kind of gastroenteritis is norovirus. People of all ages can be affected by this type of gastroenteritis. It is very contagious and can spread from one individual to another in a variety of ways. There are other different causes of gastroenteritis as well which include viral gastroenteritis, bacterial gastroenteritis, amebic dysentery, and bacillary dysentery.

Symptoms

The most common symptom of gastroenteritis is watery diarrhea. It happens due to the inflammation of the stomach or intestines. Other major symptoms of this infection are nausea, vomition, or even both of them. Stomach pain, headaches and muscle pain, and low-grade fever are also some symptoms of gastroenteritis.

What to Eat and What to Avoid

When it comes to eating then toast, bananas, rice, and chicken are good choices because they are easy to digest. People who are suffering from gastroenteritis are suggested to eat food that contains as few as possible amounts of sugar.

When it comes to avoiding them,of course, sugary foods are to be left immediately. Fruit juices, soft drinks, and fried fruits should not be eaten during gastroenteritis.

Diagnosis

A doctor may diagnose gastroenteritis from the symptoms. They may also recognize these diseases based on the data, collected from other similar cases. A rapid stool test may easily detect the rotavirus and norovirus, but, it might take some time to figure out the other viruses that can cause gastroenteritis.

Treatment

Gastroenteritis a virus, which means you’ll have to take precautionary measures first to quickly recover from it. You should not eat any solid food, try not to get dehydrated, and take some rest. Diarrhea medicines might be good as well to quickly recover from gastroenteritis.

Is Gastroenteritis Dangerous

Usually, gastroenteritis is normal and does not impose long-term illness. However, it can be very harmful if it causes dehydration. If you are suffering from this disease and notice the symptoms of dehydration, then go to a doctor immediately. A person who is affected by dehydration may have to be treated in a hospital.
