Hospitals Using Virtual Nurses to Fight Nursing Shortage | This is Weird.

Hospital systems have started utilizing Virtual Nurses to help combat the alleged nursing shortage that is sweeping the United States. Virtual nurses are able to communicate with patients quickly, which is never a bad thing, but do they solve the end problem of nurse overwhelm? and burnout? I’m not so sure.

I started this channel because I wanted other working moms, nurses, nurse practitioner students, nursing students, and whoever else to know that you CAN do school, life and work! I’d love to hear your stories of how you combine your personal interests with your family life! You are doing great things, and I hope you remember that!

As Covid Vaccine mandates become more popular, I have a few thoughts as to what is ethically the right move here. Covid vaccination decreases spread of illness, and will decrease likelihood of transmission to patients. However the vaccine mandate may cause more nurses to leave already short staffed units, making working conditions more unsafe. And costing more lives in the end.

Yup we talked about it during morning huddle. I don't know how to feel about it honestly

Some pts will ask the same questions of the virtual and floor nurse to see if it’s the same answer. What if you don’t agree?

I could see this being great for accessibility for certian nurses. Such as nurses who are pregnant, immunocompromised, live with someone who is immunocompromised, physically disabled and who loves aspects of bedside nursing and education but aren't able to be at the bedside for an extended period of time.

I can see this being great for education because I feel as though alot of education falls through the cracks and sometimes delivered in a rushed or incomplete way due to feeling busy or just not really knowing in detail and not having to time to look into it and round back around with answers.

We have nurses that want to work but Centura contracted with "Premiere", rolled out 'new' staffing grid (unsafe working conditions)…..firing and cutting hours. The patients always suffer. Please know when you wait hours for services, it's the company's fault (we are not short staffed).
They claim they are loosing money and point the finger to Premiere…
We are packed (takes months to see ortho or GI)… so if they lost money, it was either mismanagement or the CEO's at the top need bigger bonuses.

You are awesome ! Thank you so much for all the awareness you bring ! By the way, I don’t think it is okay that they are bringing about virtual nursing in this manner. I know they are going to rely heavily on this and may impact care negatively or ineffectively. Also, if I were doing that kind of work, although, working virtually sounds somewhat appealing, it actually increases liability for that nurse because they’re signing off on stuff that they are not physically there for. Too risky in my opinion.

We have had virtual nurses at my hospital for awhile now. Ours is a virtual nurse cart that we have to wheel into the room and set it up. They mainly help with admissions, but most of us feel like it’s quicker to do it ourselves then set the cart up. Especially since we still have to do our assessment, etc. They will document our assessment if the cart is set up and we say it out loud. If they are only doing the patient intake form they can call the pt on the phone. They also tell us they can walk us through things like PICC drsg changes, foley placement/care, etc. I’m assuming that’s how they say it helps with Cautis, but the last thing I’m going to do is have a virtual nurse walk me through something in front of the pt. I feel like that makes you look extremely incompetent. At least one of the virtual nurses for our floor was a nurse on our unit who transferred to another unit and then quit that to do the virtual job. Last I heard they get paid more then the bedside nurse. They aren’t available 24/7 for us. They send out a mass text when they are available and the hours they will be there that day. It’s up to us to utilize them.

Outsourcing, computers, bigotry, and vaccine mandates will always be enabled to keep people unemployed, that is what matters at the end of the day, in the USA.

I’m so ready to be a nurse educator/professor. That’s my ultimate goal. We need more so we can make better and more confident nurses. Love these convos and all of the input from everyone! These conversations are well needed.

I saw this coming. This is not the kind of healthcare I want to practice, so I quit nursing school. Best decision ever..
