Parkinson’s disease

What is Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a disorder of the brain that causes unintended movements like shaking, difficulty with balance, stiffness, etc. In most cases, people suffer from this disease after the age of 60. However, about 5 to 10 percent of people have faced this disease even before the age of 50.

Causes of Parkinson’s Disease

This disease can be caused by the loss of nerve cells in the part of the brain known as the substantia nigra. The nerve cells from this part of the brain produce a chemical called dopamine. It is noted that the biggest factor behind Parkinson’s disease is age. It mostly happens in people with age more than 60. Genetics and environmental conditions are some of the major causes of Parkinson’s disease as well.

Effects of Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease can affect your daily life. It can make your movements slow, which makes it very difficult to complete even some simple tasks. Your steps may get shorter which affects your walking speed. It also causes rigidity and balance problems. People suffering from this disease can also face problems while writing and speaking.

How to Reduce the Risk of Parkinson’s Disease

Medication is the major treatment for Parkinson’s disease, but some research suggests that aerobic exercises like walking, running, swimming or cycling, etc, can help to reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease. A balanced diet can help you to reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease as well. This diet includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc. Avoiding sugary foods, foods that contain a large number of saturated fats, alcohol, etc, can also help to ease the symptoms of this disease.

Treatments for Parkinson’s Disease

Levodopa is widely considered the most effective treatment for Parkinson’s disease. This treatment aims to fill the missing dopamine. Some other treatments for Parkinson’s disease include deep brain stimulation, neural grafting, etc.
